5 things / implicit bias
Here's our weekly summary of my favorite things I learned this week shared as #1ThingILearnedToday on LinkedIn or Twitter:
#5ThingsILearnedThisWeek:
According to the Harvard Business review analysis of 4.4 million Implicit Association Tests, over the past 10 years Americans have become less biased on the basis of sexual orientation, race, and skin tone. Bias on the basis of age and people with disabilities is not changing much, and bias on the basis of weight is increasing.
Corporations have been taking an increasing role in "get out the vote efforts." For example, many companies held voter registration drives, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota held bi-partisan candidate forums, and Patagonia even closed its stores to allow employees to vote.
TaskRabbit has one of the most diverse workforces in tech. In fact 60% of the leadership team are women; nearly 50% of the workforce are people of color, and 16% are LGBTQ+. Numerous studies show that diverse workforces are more innovative and profitable.
This October, Fifth Third Bank will increase the minimum wage for its nearly 5000 hourly workers to $18/hour. This is a 200% increase over the past two years, and their last raise helped reduce employee turnover by 16%.
The ridesharing app Lyft, which has 4,600 salaried employees, achieved pay equity among male and female employees in the same job function. It only took three years. Other tech companies (with many more employees) have had to pay millions to achieve pay equity.
