Our History

In 1995, Bernadette Smith came out in a world that was far from accepting. Nearly a decade later, in 2004, Massachusetts' highest court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Seizing this pivotal moment, Bernadette launched a successful wedding planning business with a specialty in LGBTQ weddings, empowering a community that had long been marginalized.

In her role, Bernadette expertly guided non-traditional couples through the traditional world of wedding planning. However, she soon encountered pervasive discrimination and unconscious bias, continually setting her and her clients back.

But Bernadette was never one to back down from a challenge. She was resolute in becoming a champion of inclusivity, immersing herself in learning everything she could about diversity and inclusion. Her dedication and passion led her to become a trailblazer in the industry, recognized as an expert in planning, managing, and advocating for LGBTQ weddings.

Bernadette partnered with corporate clients—hotels, caterers, travel agencies—to transform couples' visions into reality. Her expertise caught the attention of these organizations, who began seeking her guidance for their own workplace training. This shift in demand led Bernadette to transition from LGBTQ wedding management to founding her own consulting practice: the Equality Institute.

Today, Bernadette is a sought-after speaker at conferences and events, consulting with various organizations to implement comprehensive “company sweeps.” She identifies necessary policy changes, trains workforces to adopt inclusive mindsets, and helps build inclusive cultures. Partnering with a consortium of experts, Bernadette ensures her clients receive the highest quality service, driving systemic change and fostering inclusivity in the workplace.
