5 things / International Men’s Day
I thought a lot about gender this week. Not only was it International Men's Day (yes, that's really a thing, and I think it's important), but I learned about an over-correction of gender imbalance in art museums. In 2020, the Baltimore Museum of Art will only purchase art from female artists (including trans women). All of their 22 exhibits next year will have a female-centric focus. I will definitely be visiting.
Here are some other cool things I learned this week:
The Director's Guild of America released their inclusion report and found that 50% of all 2018-2019 TV episodes were directed by women and/or people of color. 5 years ago, 21% were. Specific diversity goals work -- and everyone benefits.
Xbox will have a new video game out next year called Tell Me Why, and it will be the first ever to have a transgender character/avatar.
Intel has created an "Intel Rule" designed to increase diversity within the law firms they hire. By 2021, they will only work with firms that meet certain diversity thresholds within their equity partners. It's a powerful incentive when large businesses require their partners to be more diverse.
