5 things / gratitude
This week was a huge one for my partner (who I met in the wedding industry). She has a new book out, a gratitude journal for kids and families, and it became an Amazon bestseller! If you're looking to create a gratitude routine with your family, or looking for a great gift idea, please take a look. I'm so proud of her.
In other news, here are the best practices and good news I learned this week:
Disney's Frozen 2, which is set in Scandinavia, accurately and respectfully represented the indigenous Sámi people of those countries (unlike the first Frozen). It's worth reading how they did this.
The Tournament of Hearts, a major competition in the popular Canadian sport of curling, will pay male and female teams equal prize money in 2020. This seems like an obvious best practice - right?
Major companies in the wedding industry have agreed to stop promoting weddings at former slave plantations (and some, such as Zola and Pinterest, won't accept advertising, either). These weddings are often described as "charming" and "elegant" on wedding blogs and sites.
BMO Harris Bank became the first bank to offer the True Name Mastercard. As of this week, transgender and non-binary customers can get a debit card with the name they use, regardless of the name and gender of their birth certificate or state ID.
Library systems across the U.S. are forgiving late fees for overdue books, and vowing not to charge late fees again. In San Diego, this policy change benefited 130,000 people (half of whom live in the city's poorest neighborhoods) who are now able to access the library's resources, such as computers to apply for jobs.
