#5ThingsILearnedThisWeek:
Recently, a customer at Denny's Restaurants called the police on a transgender woman in the restroom. The police said the woman did nothing wrong and Denny's issued a statement saying they will not tolerate discrimination of any kind and that transgender people are free to use the restroom of their gender identity. Organizations with a large front line should take note of this best practice.
Dr. Francis Collins, a cisgender white man and the Director of the National Institutes of Health, stated that he will no longer speak on all-male panels ("manels") to provide an opportunity for diverse voices. Providing diverse speakers is a best practice for meeting planners and even some professional speakers are requiring these "inclusion riders." Dr. Collins is a great example of a person of privilege speaking out as a powerful ally.
The Entrepreneur Network in the UK analyzed data from the country's 100 fastest growing companies and discovered that 49 of them have at least one foreign-born founder. This is notable because the country's population is only 14% foreign-born, and showcases the innovation that can diversity can bring.
Glassdoor.com did a survey of 5000 job-seekers in the U.S. and Europe and found that 70% would not apply to work for a company whose values did not align with their own. 59% (and 65% of 18-34 year olds) found culture more important than salary. "Culture" includes diversity and inclusion and this data is one more way to get buy-in for DEI initiatives at your organization.
The global makeup industry is growing in part due to an increasing number of Gen Z men wearing makeup. The men's makeup industry is currently valued at $1 billion and expected to reach $5 billion in 5 years, due in part to social media influences who are increasingly comfortable with diverse gender expressions, and the rejection of toxic masculinity.
