5 Things / Empowered
Listen to this episode:
Crain’s Chicago Business asked, “Bernadette, what’s your take on the current state of DEI?” I was honored to write an OpEd in this week’s edition if you’d like to check it out.
Here’s the thing: we ought to empower ourselves to promote and defend DEI. A new era is about to begin here in the U.S. I’ve been hired to spend an afternoon coaching leaders on how to talk about DEI in this current landscape.
By the end of the workshop, each leader will have their own curated set of DEI talking points that resonate with them that they can remember and easily reference…Leader A’s list will be different from Leader B’s. They’ll have a firm grasp on key terms and know how to swiftly disarm anti-diversity resisters. They’ll feel empowered, not overwhelmed.
People in power with good intentions need to have the tools to cut through the bull and become legit change-makers. If this sounds like something that would be useful at your org, respond and we’ll set it up!
This Week's Good Vibes:
Love Lessons, Autism Edition!
UCLA Health is launching PEERS for Dating, a groundbreaking 20-week program designed to help adults with autism navigate romantic relationships. Participants will gain essential skills, such as choosing appropriate partners, online dating etiquette, handling rejection, and more. 💡The research-driven program combines group sessions and real-world coaching with the goal of fulfilling relationships—key to social and emotional well-being.
Pickleball: Serving Redemption in Prison
The Pickleball for Incarcerated Communities League (PICL) offers camaraderie, stress relief, and personal growth for inmates. The program is now in every Connecticut correctional institution and in over 40 facilities in 12 different states. Participants play daily, compete in tournaments, and even coach fellow inmates, fostering teamwork and joy in an otherwise challenging environment. ♐Offering purpose and connection fosters personal growth and second chances.
Inclusion, Designed to the Nines!
Virgin Media O2’s new London HQ redefines inclusivity with soundproof workstations, wheelchair-accessible meeting rooms, retreat rooms, gender-neutral toilets, and multi-faith rooms with Wudu facilities. Collaborating with employees and DEI specialists, architects created spaces for diverse mobility needs, neurodiverse sensitivities, and sensory preferences. Thoughtful details like dimmers, color-contrasted furniture, and left-handed appliances create a workspace that truly works for all. ♐Inclusive design boosts morale, productivity, and belonging by removing barriers and valuing every individual’s needs.
Celebrities and Companies Pledge Wildlife Support
In response to devastating Los Angeles wildfires, celebrities and corporations are stepping up. See a big list here. Taylor Swift donated to 10 organizations, including 211 LA and MusiCares, while Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re: wild pledged $1 million for recovery. Hyatt, Netflix, and Disney collectively contributed over $40 million to relief efforts, including funding for housing, food, and rebuilding. Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation donated $2.5 million to aid displaced families and community centers. ♐Support local organizations aiding wildfire recovery.
Apple & Costco Stand Firm on DEI!
Apple and Costco are doubling down on their DEI commitments. Both companies urged shareholders to reject resolutions by a conservative think tank pushing for DEI rollbacks, citing legal and financial risks. Apple highlighted its long-standing diversity efforts, including its Supplier Diversity Program and employee network groups. Costco emphasized the business value of inclusivity, stating that DEI enhances its ability to attract and retain top talent among 300,000 global employees. ♐Companies prioritizing DEI build stronger teams and better long-term growth. Inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a competitive edge.
