5 Things / Yes, And
Listen to the Full Episode Here:
In the art of improv comedy, there’s a rule called “yes, and “ – this rule requires the performer to agree with the last person speaking, and add to the story. If you don’t follow the “yes, and…” rule, the story and the humor fizzle out.
In a February episode of 5 Things in 15 Minutes (the live stream/podcast version of this newsletter), I was joined by Rhonda Payne, who was a fabulous guest. You can listen here. We had a vibrant and robust discussion, and what I loved is how Rhonda added to the good vibes. She gave a “yes, and…” to each story by explaining how to build upon those wins. When we build upon the wins, after celebrating them, of course, we can get more momentum. We can bring more people along when we keep adding to the story.
Yes, and… has continued to be a theme in 5 Things in 15 Minutes, and last week, Sheri Crosby Wheeler, former VP of DEI at Fossil, also discussed how to add to the 5 wins we discussed. Sheri is an expert on the inside, and her wisdom is priceless. I hope you take some time to listen.
Here Are This Week's Good Vibes:
Desantis Controversial Policies Spark Florida Convention Cancellations as Tourism Shows Signs of Slowing
Amidst a backlash against Florida's controversial policies on LGBTQ rights and race, at least five more conventions and conferences have pulled events from the state. The cancellations could cost the county millions of dollars in lost revenue from hotel bookings, transportation, food, and other travel expenses. I love this because when companies and organizations take a stand against discriminatory policies and advocate for equal rights, we all win.
Pie Shop on Chicago’s South Side Serves More Than Dessert
Pastry Chef Maya-Camille Broussard opened her brick-and-mortar store, Justice of the Pies, in Chicago's South Side. Her bakery is designed to be inclusive, with accessible counters, Braille inscriptions, and language that welcomes and respects everyone. As a hard-of-hearing Black pastry chef, she embraces her identity and leverages her heightened sense of smell and taste to create amazing products. By openly demonstrating diversity and accessibility, Maya-Camille Broussard sets an example that other businesses can follow to create welcoming spaces for all.
CVS Rolls Out Collection of Accessible Products
CVS is launching its Universal Tools collection, featuring six self-care tools designed to be more inclusive and accessible for people with disabilities. The line includes nail clippers, tweezers, scissors, and other items with wide, open handles and non-slip silicone grips. CVS collaborated with members of the disability community and conducted surveys and in-home testing to ensure the products' effectiveness. In doing so, CVS is setting an example for other retailers to follow. Something as simple as these products allow people with disabilities to take care of their personal needs independently.
Armless Pilot Gives Students a Look at First Foot-Controlled Plane
Jessica Cox is the world’s first licensed pilot without arms who currently uses her feet to control traditional planes. But in 2025, she’ll be flying around the world in the "Impossible Airplane," a special adaptive plane with a foot control panel on the floor. What I love here is that the plane not only demonstrates technical innovation but also promotes a more inclusive world where people with disabilities can pursue their passions and careers without limitations.
Jags’ Maxen Is the First Male American Pro Sports Coach to Come Out as Gay
Kevin Maxen, an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, has become the first male coach in major American men's professional sports to publicly come out as gay. This is a significant milestone in major American men's professional sports, with very few out athletes, and no out coaches until now. Maxen's openness about his identity can inspire and empower others who may be facing similar challenges or fears about being authentic. With his courage, I’m hopeful we’ll start to see more of these dominoes fall.
Call to Action:
August is National Black Business Month, a time to recognize and support Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across the country. Of course, you should do that every month, but add some extra intention this month. Here’s a great one: Tubby’s Taste, delicious, island-inspired cookies, available for corporate gifts or treats at home.
