5 Things / Operationalizing
Listen to this episode:
This week I’ve had a few “we have to spend our budget in the next few weeks” conversations – please reach out if you’re in a similar situation.
I delivered a keynote this week for association leaders on the current state of DEI and how we keep going amidst so much uncertainty. I was fired up!
What’s the bottom line? Let’s operationalize DEI, and bring that lens to all functions so it becomes the default. Embed DEI so it’s just the way things are done. When it’s just the way things are done, it’s harder to take it away. Many ideas of how to do that are in my book Inclusive 360, and others are in virtually every 5 Things.
I love talking about this stuff, so please respond if you’d like to set up a strategy call for the coming year.
This Week’s Good Vibes:
Breaking Barriers in Fashion
Alex Consani made history as the first openly transgender person to win Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards. At just 21, Consani, who signed with IMG Models at 15, thanked Black trans women who paved the way for her success. She is known for her work with top brands like Chanel and Victoria's Secret, and for her viral TikTok presence. ♐Encourage diverse role models and advocate for systemic change in your workplace.
Wages Are Rising—But Not Enough!
Starting January 1, 2025, 22 U.S. states will increase their minimum wage rates. States like California, Illinois, and New York will see moderate increases, with California's rate reaching $16.50 an hour, while Illinois and New York will raise theirs to $15 and $15.50, respectively. Hawaii will see a larger increase of $2 per hour, while some states, like Arizona, will see minimal boosts. The federal minimum wage remains stagnant at $7.25 per hour. ♐Employers can help by ensuring competitive pay and advocating for broader legislative change.
Theme Parks Drop Disability Paperwork!
Universal Parks in Florida and California have simplified their disability accommodation procedures by no longer requiring advance approval from a third party. Visitors with disabilities can now access the Attractions Assistance Pass directly through guest services upon arrival, rather than needing an Individual Accessibility Card (IAC) 48 hours in advance. This change follows legal challenges and aims to streamline the process. ♐Simplified processes ensure fairer, more inclusive access.
TJ Maxx Teams Up for Inclusion!
TJ Maxx is selling apparel designed and produced by autistic people, thanks to a new partnership with Spectrum Designs, a nonprofit employing neurodiverse people. This collaboration includes t-shirts with original designs by neurodivergent artists and is available in over 700 stores nationwide. This collection brings their creativity to a broader audience, changing perceptions about neurodiversity in the workplace. ♐Supporting neurodivergent employees can drive innovation and positively impact brand reputation.
History is Made for Trans Rights
Chase Strangio made history as the first known transgender person to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. As part of the ACLU's case against Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, his argument could significantly impact civil rights protections for transgender individuals. The stakes are high for families, doctors, and activists who fight for trans rights. ♐Everyone and every organization should advocate for equal protection under the law, and the dismantling of discriminatory policies.
