5 Things / Building Trust
List to the Full Episode Here:
This week, I'd like to extend my heartfelt support to those who are enduring the pain of war and violence, whether personally or through their loved ones. Wishing you hope amidst the darkness.

Leading came easy to me, but I had to learn to be a manager, and there were lots of bumps in the road. I particularly struggled with giving clear, specific directions and examples of what success looked like. I justified this by telling myself that I hired people I trusted and that micromanaging just isn’t my style. But the results were that, without clear guidance, people on my team had self-doubt, over-thought things, and sometimes missed deadlines. And it was my fault – because I didn’t create psychological safety in those relationships. TBH, I was kind of a know-it-all and I didn’t create an environment where people felt like they could ask questions or mess up.
The truth is that I mess up a lot, but now, I love talking about it. It’s made me more authentic, more human, and frankly more fun. The results are greater rapport and trust with everyone, not just the people on my team. I learned that talking about my mistakes didn’t cause people to respect or trust me less. In fact, they began to respect and trust me (and themselves) more. I love a good win-win.
On this week’s 5 Things in 15 Minutes, I’ll be joined by Tom Geraghty, founder of Psychsafety.com. Tom is a recognized authority in creating safer, high-performing, and more inclusive workplaces, and on the show, I’ll ask Tom to share some tips on how to do just that.
Here Are This Week's Good Vibes:
Selma Blair and Isaac Mizrahi Debut Accessible Fashion Collection: 'A Real Dream Come True'
Hollywood actress Selma Blair and renowned fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi are launching an accessible clothing collection with QVC called "Isaac Mizrahi Live! x Selma Blair." Blair's diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2018 and her experiences with mobility challenges inspired this collection. It includes features like easy-open necklines, magnetic closures, stretch fabrics, and flat seams, and it aims to be both fashionable and functional. I’ve written about inclusive fashion here for years now, and I’m so happy the trend continues to grow. Everyone should have access to options that allow them to look and feel their best.
Job Market Transparency Soars: 50% of Indeed Postings Now Include Salary Info, a 25% Increase from 2020
Over the last three years, the share of job postings on Indeed that include wage or salary information has doubled to 50%. This increase is attributed to legislation in several states requiring employers to provide estimated salary ranges for job openings. Pay transparency is crucial; it benefits both job-seekers and companies' recruiting efforts. This is especially important for women and traditionally underrepresented individuals who experience pay gaps and may not feel equipped to negotiate salaries, either during the initial contract negotiation or as they advance within the organization.
Mauritius Decriminalizes Gay Sex in Historic Ruling
The Supreme Court of Mauritius has decriminalized gay sex, overturning a colonial-era law. In doing so, the court noted that the law had been inherited from British colonial history and did not reflect indigenous Mauritian values. This ruling is a significant step for LGBTQ+ rights in Mauritius, ending 185 years of state-sanctioned stigma against the community. There are still about 63 countries remaining that criminalize homosexuality. We'll celebrate every victory.
Dictionary.com's Inclusive Language Evolution: Embracing Diversity and Gender-Neutrality
Dictionary.com has expanded its vocabulary to include terms such as "diverse-owned," "CODA" (Child of Deaf Adults), "box braids," and eight LGBTQ+ terms. Additionally, the website has removed binary gender phrases and now employs gender-neutral pronouns. It replaces "he or she" or "his or her" with "they" or omits pronouns where unnecessary. This change reflects a broader shift in language usage and recognizes, legitimizes, and celebrates more identities.
Levi Strauss Champions Mental Health in the Workplace: A Progressive Approach to Employee Well-being
Diversity encompasses mental health, and Levi Strauss is taking a significant step by offering 17 professional sessions annually to all its global staff (20,000 employees) through Lyra Health. The company has also incorporated mental well-being into its employee engagement surveys, and leaders are actively encouraged to facilitate open dialogues on mental health. I'm genuinely impressed by this progressive approach, which destigmatizes mental health challenges and sets the stage for greater success for both individuals and the organization. Numerous studies have shown that improved well-being enhances productivity and employee retention.
