5 Things / (Over) Sharing
Listen to this episode:
This week I presented an inclusive leadership session for government officials. We had a robust discussion about authenticity and psychological safety in their workplace. It’s hard for them because generationally (Gen X and above), they weren’t taught to share their feelings – and they work in government. Yet, the generations they’re managing expect more authenticity and connectedness.
I get it. I was definitely raised not to talk about my feelings. Clearly I’ve gotten over that because longtime readers of 5 Things know I’ve written about my family, getting fired, divorce, mistakes I’ve made, etc. I do it on stage, too. Here’s the secret, though: it’s authentic, but it’s also a strategy. The sharing invites people to laugh and not be intimidated, and open themselves up to learn.
My advice is to think of a few stories from your past, when things didn’t go your way, especially at work. Pick stories that aren’t too raw and that you can comfortably share (not OVER-share) in a minute or two, 1:1 or in teams. It’s a simple way to show your humanity and bring your team closer together.
This Week’s Good Vibes:
Student Loans Benefit Rolls out
Thanks to the Secure Act 2.0, employers can now match student loan payments with 401(k) contributions, even if you’re not adding to your retirement account. Walgreens is the latest company to offer this benefit to its 300,000 employees, joining others like Chipotle and Verizon. With 30% of Walgreens workers facing student debt, this match helps prioritize both financial health and retirement savings—especially for pharmacists, who often carry $170,000 in debt. ♐Advocate for this program at your workplace!
Flying High on Inclusivity!
Virgin Atlantic is raising the bar for accessible travel by partnering with deaf influencers like Jodie Ounsley and twins Hermon and Heroda Berhane. They tested the airline's new services for deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers, including British Sign Language (BSL) trained crew and subtitled in-flight entertainment. Their feedback will shape Virgin’s Accessibility Advisory Board as the airline aims to create a more inclusive experience for everyone. (h/t to Karen Catlin) ♐Airlines can prioritize inclusivity through feedback-driven improvements.
Changing the Game with Changing Tables!
Iowa’s rest stops are leading the way in accessibility by installing adult-sized changing tables for people with disabilities. These height-adjustable tables provide dignity and ease for those needing personal care on the road. With many states following suit, this growing trend is transforming travel for families and individuals who rely on adult changing tables, making public spaces more inclusive and accessible. ♐Advocate for adult changing tables in your community!
Jessica Campbell Breaks the Ice
Jessica Campbell made history as the National Hockey League's first full-time female assistant coach with the Seattle Kraken. Her groundbreaking role isn't just about a title—it's about transforming the sport. Campbell brings her expertise and focus to a team eager for success. As she puts it, diverse perspectives create better outcomes, both in life and in sports. ♐Representation matters—diverse voices drive innovation and success.
Spotify’s ‘Work From Anywhere’ Stays!
Despite tech giants pushing return-to-office mandates, Spotify is sticking with its popular "work from anywhere" policy. Following layoffs that cut 17% of its staff, the company saw market value soar and employee retention rates improve. Flexible work has become a key part of its culture, contributing to diversity and lower attrition. While acknowledging challenges in virtual collaboration, Spotify’s leadership believes in treating staff like adults by providing flexibility. ♐Flexibility boosts retention and diversity, which then boosts innovation!
