5 Things / Butt Kicked

Listen to this episode:

I did it again. I was playing pickleball this week when I caught myself making an assumption about another player, someone I’d never met. Let’s just say, I was ready to kick some butt on the court, but instead got my butt kicked.

I have to laugh about it. Foiled again by mistaken assumptions! I can’t help it! In the heat of the moment, I’m hard-wired to be judgmental. It takes conscious effort to be otherwise. Fortunately, I keep getting sent these “ouch moments” to remind me to slow down and notice individuality and humanity.

Life, and work, are full of surprising, sometimes funny moments, often when we take ourselves too seriously. Those are stories I’d like to read more of from leaders, the stories when we get knocked down a peg, not in dramatic, “fall from grace” ways, but in the smaller ways that show our humanity. Humility is one of the most under-appreciated leadership skills…and, yes, I believe it’s a skill.

Here Are This Week's Good Vibes:

  1. Inclusivity Strikes Back: Star Wars Edition!

    • The new Star Wars book Secrets of the Clone Troopers introduces Sister, a transgender clone trooper. Sister’s journey, from fearing rejection to finding acceptance among fellow soldiers, illustrates the value of authentic diversity in storytelling. There was definitely backlash, reflecting ongoing intolerance within fandoms, but the positive representation of trans characters is incredibly important, especially given all the anti-trans legislation. ♐Encourage diverse voices in your organization’s storytelling and media choices.

  2. Uber Says: Accessibility, Full Speed Ahead!

    • Uber is enhancing its app with features to better serve riders with disabilities. Riders can now self-identify as deaf, hard of hearing, or visually impaired, and choose communication preferences like chat-only, ensuring seamless interaction with drivers. Additionally, Uber is piloting a feature to notify drivers when a service animal will be present. They’ve also created a training video for drivers on handling service animals, through a partnership with Guide Dogs for the Blind. ♐ Collaborate with external experts to better understand the needs of your increasingly diverse customers.

  3. Representation Index: Time for Inclusivity Check!

    • The new Representation Index is here to score brands on the inclusivity of their ads. Created by Female Quotient and XR Extreme Reach, the index uses AI to assess ads based on age, body type, gender expression, skin tone, and more. Scores help brands, including giants like Procter & Gamble, identify gaps in representation before campaigns launch. With over 85% of purchase decisions made by women and other underrepresented groups, inclusion isn’t optional—it’s good business. ♐ Use data-driven tools to assess your DEI efforts and course-correct in real-time.

  4. Degrees Without Debt? Yes, Please!

  5. Diwali Delights

    • Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, is coming up, and retailers are ready. With 5.4 million South Asians, U.S. retailers like Walmart, Target, and Costco are offering festive products that resonate with South Asians and beyond. There’s even a new Diwali Barbie, and Diwali-themed decor and gifts are helping to bring this festival to the mainstream, fostering a sense of belonging for South Asian communities. ♐ Offer culturally relevant products and experiences.

Good Vibes to Go

It’s almost Halloween, a time when cultural appropriation can go very badly. Check out these tips for an inclusive Halloween, from our friends at The Diversity Movement.
